Dibrugarh: Floods have ripped apart 30 tea gardens across four Assam districts, submerging workers’ homes and disrupting livelihoods and essential services.Speaking at Dibrugarh Airport, Teli said 11 gardens suffered severe damage, including Bamunpukhuri, Amgoorie, Borbam, Santak, Shulangkathani and Sundar Pukhuri. The affected gardens are spread across Jorhat, Sivasagar, Charaideo and Golaghat districts.Teli was at the airport to receive Union health minister JP Nadda ahead of his three-day visit to Assam, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh to assess flood damage.“The floods have caused massive damage not just to the gardens but to the very lives of the workers who depend on them. This sector forms the foundation of Assam’s economy, and its disruption affects thousands of families directly,” Teli said.Floodwaters have submerged many workers’ homes, preventing them from reporting for work.“Workers whose houses are still under water are struggling even to reach the gardens. They are having to move around on boats, excavators and tractors just to access essential services,” he added.Teli visited Bamunpukhuri, Amgoorie and Borbam gardens to assess the damage. “Based on what I have seen on the ground, it will take at least a month for these gardens to recover from the impact of the floods,” he said.He added that additional welfare measures would be worked out with garden management beyond existing govt relief schemes.Meanwhile, young volunteers from BJP’s Chah Morcha have left for the flood-hit areas to assist with relief and clean-up work.
