Bhubaneswar: A brain dead patient from Cuttack’s district’s Banki gave a fresh lease of life to others after the family consented to donate the patient’s liver and corneas at SUM Ultimate Medicare here on Wednesday.The patient, a teacher, was admitted to hospital in critical condition following sudden medical emergency. “Despite dedicated efforts of the medical and critical care teams, who ensured all possible treatment and supportive measures, the patient’s condition continued to deteriorate. The patient was subsequently declared brain-stem dead after completion of the prescribed medical assessment and certification process,” the hospital said in an official statement.After detailed counselling, the patient’s family consented to organ donation. The organ retrieval procedure was carried out after completion of all necessary medical and legal formalities.This was the fifth case of multiple cadaveric organ retrieval undertaken at the hospital. The hospital team expressed heartfelt appreciation to the family for their selfless and compassionate decision.
