New Delhi: Delhi University has suspended a PhD scholar of its Faculty of Law for allegedly assaulting a teacher and banned his entry into the DU campus with immediate effect. The university has not specified the duration of the suspension.According to a notice issued by the proctor’s office Monday, the incident took place around 10.30am at Umang Bhawan. According to a footage reviewed by the proctor’s office before taking the decision, the scholar, a second-year PhD student admitted in the 2024-25 academic session (phase-II), allegedly slapped the faculty member Monday as he was entering the Law Centre building, causing him to fall. Several people gathered immediately and a security personnel were seen intervening.The footage showed the student engaging in a heated argument with the teacher and allegedly making repeated attempts to attack him as those present tried to de-escalate the situation. The reason for the altercation was not immediately known.The notice stated the scholar’s entry into the DU premises had been banned under Ordinance XV-B of Delhi University Act, 1922.DU proctor Manoj Kumar told TOI that a proctorial inquiry would be constituted and further action would be taken based on its findings, which could include termination.The faculty member, who was part of the panel that interviewed the student for PhD admission last year, told TOI that he did not know the student beyond the interview. “He all of a sudden attacked me with slaps and punches. I fell down. He kept blabbering, ‘How dare you question me during the interview.’ I don’t know what triggered him,” he said.The teacher said he underwent a medical examination and filed a police complaint.The student could not be contacted for a response.
