Kanpur: Despite the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting a 90% possibility of showers, Kanpur remained dry on Wednesday, with intermittent sunshine and cloud cover prevailing throughout the day. On a couple of occasions, the clouds raised hopes of rain, but they soon dispersed without bringing any significant showers. The sunshine pushed the maximum temperature up by 0.9 degree Celsius, while the minimum temperature also rose to 26.4°C, around 2°C higher than Tuesday. The CSA weather observatory recorded maximum relative humidity at 91%.Light easterly winds, blowing at 2.5 to 3 kmph, failed to evaporate sweat effectively, leaving residents to endure another day of sultry and uncomfortable weather. The IMD has forecast that the monsoon will remain fully active across all districts of the Kanpur division during the next 24 hours (August 19-20). A yellow alert has been issued for most parts of the division, with the possibility of dense cloud cover, thunderstorms and lightning. Heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated places. For Kanpur Nagar, the sky is expected to remain heavily overcast, with a 90% chance of one or two spells of heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms during the afternoon and night. Humidity may rise to 92%, which could increase sultriness and discomfort before rainfall.S N Sunil Pandey, weather expert at CSA University, said atmospheric moisture and the development of new weather systems were increasing the moisture influx into the region. He said the Kanpur division was likely to witness cloudy weather from August 20 to 23, with intermittent strong winds and scattered light to moderate rainfall. Isolated pockets could receive heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds, thunderstorms and lightning. He added that strong surface winds were also likely at times, while rainfall and increased wind activity could finally provide some relief from the prevailing sultry conditions.
