Erode: A 47-year-old man drowned when attempting to rescue a cat that had fallen into a well in Erode late on Saturday night. Police said he was under the influence of alcohol when the incident took place. The deceased has been identified as M Ganesan, of Thiru Ve Ka Road, in Surampatti. “A cat fell into a well behind a chicken shop on the street, and Ganesan who noticed it jumped in to save the cat. However, investigation revealed that Ganesan who was intoxicated, was unable to swim back to the surface. He suffocated and drowned in the well,” said a police officer from Surampatti station.Police who were alerted about the incident, reached the scene along with fire and rescue services personnel. The body was recovered after an hour-long effort and shifted to the Erode Government Hospital for a postmortem. A case has been registered.
