Kanpur: The city remained largely dry on Thursday, with a brief spell of drizzle in some pockets during the evening doing little to provide relief from the prevailing sultry conditions.Intermittent cloud cover and sunshine pushed up the mercury, with the city observatory recording a maximum temperature of 35.6°C, 1.2°C higher than Wednesday. The minimum temperature remained unchanged at 26.8°C.High humidity of 81%, coupled with slow north-westerly winds blowing at 1.8 to 4.7 kmph, added to the discomfort of residents. The heat index hovered around 42°C and was expected to remain between 39°C and 40°C during the evening and night.The brief drizzle lasted only a few minutes and failed to bring any noticeable change in weather conditions.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and generally cloudy skies across all districts of the Kanpur division over the next 24 hours. According to the IMD and CSA Meteorological Centre, moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal are likely to keep conditions humid despite the possibility of rainfall.CSA weather expert S.N. Sunil Pandey said atmospheric moisture and the formation of new weather systems were increasing the inflow of moisture into the region. As a result, cloudy conditions are likely to prevail across the Kanpur division between Aug 14 and 17, with intermittent strong winds and scattered light to moderate rainfall at isolated places.He said the showers could be accompanied by gusty winds, thunderclouds and lightning.
