Kanpur: The district administration on Wednesday launched ‘Read the Newspaper’ and ‘Go to School’ campaign along with the communicable disease control drive at Composite School in Benajhabar area of the city.The students took out an awareness rally in the presence of district magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh and chief development officer Deeksha Jain.The DM stated that fostering the habit of reading newspapers regularly among children in schools is an extremely beneficial initiative as newspapers connect children with events across the country and the world. “This fosters the development of their linguistic proficiency, analytical skills, and understanding of current affairs”, he said. Henceforth, children in the district’s schools would be provided the opportunity to read leading Hindi and English newspapers on a daily basis, he added.Under this initiative, students would collect significant news clippings, which would be linked to school activities like quizzes, knowledge competitions, and discussion sessions to foster reading habits and enhance expressive abilities, the DM said.During the programme, Elzima, a class 2 student from Composite School Maswanpur, read from a newspaper in the presence of the DM. The DM and the CDO enrolled two children—Aishwarya and Prince, in the school and distributed free textbooks to the students. With the support of the District Library, leading newspapers in both Hindi and English were made available to the schools.Providing information regarding the Communicable Disease Control Campaign, chief medical officer Dr Haridatt Nemi stated that protection against various diseases is possible through sanitation, access to clean drinking water, and the observance of personal hygiene habits. Children also presented cultural performances during the programme. Eight teachers were honoured with certificates of appreciation for their contributions.
