Dibrugarh: DHSK College observed the 98th death anniversary of tribal freedom fighter Pu Chengjapao Doungel on Friday, in its first such observance.The programme was organised by the Tribal Research and Development Centre and the political science department to commemorate Doungel’s life and sacrifice and highlight tribal resistance in the northeast.Doungel was a prominent leader of the Anglo-Kuki War (1917–1919), during which tribal fighters resisted British rule.An illustrated presentation by Lamkholal Doungel, associate professor of political science, covered the leader’s life and resistance, using archival material.Saikia said Doungel represented “an important chapter in the history of tribal resistance to British colonial rule” and praised his courage against the British Empire. He urged students and researchers to preserve their communities’ heritage.Vice-principal Partha Ganguli described Doungel as an “unsung hero” and said it could take his story and the war to wider audiences.Retired Dibru College professor Ranjit Singha said, “I had goosebumps listening to the account of Pu Chengjapao Doungel and the Anglo-Kuki War.”
