CWG 2026: Neeraj Chopra advances to javelin throw final; Rohit, Yashvir also make the cut

India’s Neeraj Chopra advanced to the Commonwealth Games men’s javelin throw final after producing a best throw of 79.61m to finish fifth in the qualifying round at the Scotstoun Stadium here on Thursday (July 30, 2026).

Neeraj felt that the “windy and cold conditions” made life difficult for the throwers. “The conditions were quite tough, and it was challenging to judge the trajectory because of the wind. The warm-up, too, was very challenging. Since I was 18th in the throwing order, the wait was long in such tough conditions. It was windy and cold. I am happy that the other two Indians have also qualified for the final,” the 28-year-old said.

Rohit Yadav and Yashvir Singh also booked their places in the medal round, coming ninth and 10th respectively among the 12 qualifiers. Rohit recorded a top effort of 78.37m, while Yashvir was just a centimetre behind his compatriot.

Paris Olympics gold medallist Arshad Nadeem from Pakistan finished seventh with 78.63m, his season’s best. Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, who arrived in Glasgow with a season’s and personal best of 92.62m, topped the qualifying round by hurling the spear to 82.84m. Anderson Peters of Grenada came second with 81.29m.
