Dhanbad: Sadar circle officer Rampravesh Kumar on Friday registered an FIR with Dhanbad police station after allegedly receiving an extortion demand of Rs 1 crore earlier this month.In his complaint, Kumar said he first received a message on WhatsApp on Sept 14. Alleging that Kumar was earning money through land-related work, the sender threatened to shoot him if he did not pay up Rs 1 crore. Several such messages were sent from the number till late in the night, prompting Kumar to verbally inform the police of the matter. Kumar subsequently registered an FIR on Friday.“Preliminary probe has indicated that the sender was using a stolen phone, making immediate identification difficult,” Manoj Pandey, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Dhanbad police station, said.Police have also examined the bank account number and UPI details allegedly shared by the sender for transferring the extortion money. “The mobile phone owner, bank account holder and UPI account holder were found to be different individuals,” the OC said. Police are conducting technical analysis to identify the sender and determine whether the different account holders have any link to the alleged extortion attempt.
