Keonjhar: A wild female deer was killed in a collision with a bike which was passing through Purunabandhgoda-Nandabar road in Anandapur forest range on Thursday. The biker and the pillion rider were injured in the collision. The incident took place in Baranga reserve forest road under Anandpur wildlife division . The injured, identified as Gautam Jena (26) and Tuna Jena (22) of Kolikala village, were first admitted to a nearby hospital and later shifted to Danagadi community health centre in Jajpur. As the condition of one of them deteriorated, he was referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack.Divisional forest officer Prashant Kumar Panda said the deer was buried after a postmortem. He added that despite awareness campaigns, rash driving on the stretch continues to cause accidents, and that more than 100 deer are believed to live in the Baranga reserve forest though no recent census has been conducted.Sources said the road passes through the forest and deer often cross it suddenly, leading to accidents. Locals have demanded fencing on both sides of the road. A forest official, however, said fencing would be difficult as the area is large and deer require free movement within the forest.
