Hyderabad: In a major internal fraud that has raised serious concerns, the Karimnagar police commissionerate has uncovered a ₹1.40 crore salary scam involving misuse of govt funds over several years. The fraud came to light during an internal probe led by the task force assistant commissioner of police, which revealed systematic manipulation of the payroll system. According to officials, a police department employee who earlier worked in the pay section allegedly exploited the employee IDs of three deceased constables to siphon off salaries between 2022 and 2026. Following the revelations, Karimnagar police commissioner Ghouse Alam ordered strict action, and a criminal case has been registered at Karimnagar I Town police station. Investigators found that the accused tampered with the integrated financial management information system portal by inserting different names under the IDs of the deceased personnel, allowing salaries to be drawn without detection. To execute the scheme, the accused reportedly opened fake bank accounts in private banks and linked them to personal mobile numbers, enabling seamless transfer and withdrawal of the funds. The misappropriated money was allegedly used for personal expenses, including loans and other financial commitments, investigators said. Inspector Ramchander Rao said the investigation is ongoing. Authorities launched a parallel internal inquiry to examine possible involvement of others. Officials said further action will follow based on the findings of the probe.
