Jamshedpur: The Dalma forest division organised a trekking event on Sunday for students to educate them about wildlife and the challenges faced by the forest in the present times.The five-km-long trek on the scenic landscape of Dalma witnessed an encouraging response, with 150 students of Karima City College (KCC) and Jamshedpur Co-operative College (JCC) taking part in it.
During the four-hour-long trek, which commenced from the forest entry point opposite Wave International Hotel on the National Highway (NH-33) and concluded at the Pindrabera forest guest house, the participants engaged in different environmental conservation activities.The students were informed about the ecosystem of the Dalma forest and the different species of wild animals found in the forest. They were given insights into the history of the Dalma sanctuary, officials said.A team of seven officials, including three trekkers, two forest guards, and two Eco Village Committee (EVC) volunteers, regulated the trek.The event comprised collection and disposal of plastic waste littered along the trail, segregation of degradable and non-degradable waste, and an informative session.“How plastic pollution is impacting wildlife in the forest was explained to the students,” divisional forest officer (DFO), Saba Alam Ansari said.Besides, an awareness session on climate change and global warming was held, wherein the participants were informed about its impact on the environment and forest.Sajiv Kumar, one of the participants, said: “We learnt why nature is important for the sustainability of mankind. Besides, we got to know about the issues that are impacting biodiversity, ecology, forest, and environment.”
