Kanpur: Police on Wednesday recovered 24 kg of stolen silver buried in three pits inside Nana Rao Park in Kanpur after the accused, who allegedly stole the valuables, led officers to the spots by counting his steps.According to police, Sudhakar Agrawal, an MCA graduate, was arrested for allegedly stealing 30 kg of silver and cash from the house of jeweller Kishore Singh in Chatai Mohal.A case was registered on Sept 18, and CCTV footage helped police identify and arrest Agrawal, who was Singh’s neighbour. However, what astonished the investigators was the manner in which the accused allegedly led them to the hidden silver.ACP Amit Kumar Pandey said Agrawal had an exceptionally sharp memory and was able to pinpoint the exact locations in the park where he had allegedly concealed the stolen silver.According to the ACP, Agrawal counted 29 steps from the parking gate and led police to the first pit, from where 8 kg of silver was recovered.He then walked another 22 steps and pointed out a second pit containing 10 kg of silver. Near a tree, he asked officers to dig at a spot about four hand spans away, leading to the recovery of another 6 kg of silver from a third pit.During questioning, Agrawal told police that he had not conducted any reconnaissance before the theft. He claimed that he was wandering on the road in a disturbed state when he noticed the jeweller’s gate and a room open.He further told police that the key to a cupboard was lying nearby and that he took away the silver after opening the cupboard.Police are now preparing to seek his custody remand to recover the remaining silver and cash.
