Mumbai: The price of a medical degree in Maharashtra’s private colleges is climbing once again. For the 2026-27 academic year, annual MBBS fees range from Rs 7.50 lakh to Rs 17.13 lakh, a gap wide enough to significantly alter a family’s education budget and borrowing plans.
For parents already calculating the cost of five-and-a-half years of tuition, hostel accommodation, food, books and other charges, even a moderate annual increase can add several lakhs to the final bill.
The latest fee list approved by the Maharashtra Fees Regulating Authority covers 19 private MBBS colleges. Vedantaa Institute of Medical Sciences in Palghar tops the list at Rs 17.13 lakh annually, followed by Nagpur’s NKP Salve Institute of Medical Sciences at Rs 15.62 lakh. At the other end are Bharatratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College and Hospital, Pune, with an annual fee of Rs 7.50 lakh, and SSPM Medical College, Sindhudurg, at Rs 7.64 lakh. Several colleges have moved sharply upwards. NKP Salve’s annual fee has risen from Rs 13.95 lakh to Rs 15.62 lakh, an increase of Rs 1.67 lakh in a year. Dr Rajendra Gode Medical College in Amravati has gone from Rs 7.11 lakh to Rs 8.93 lakh, while Parbhani Medical College has moved from Rs 7.54 lakh to Rs 8.78 lakh. “Vedantaa, without any infrastructure upgrade, asking this huge fee is not justified. Also, SSPM on paper shows low tuition fees but charges huge amounts towards hostel, mess and other expenses,” said parent representative Sudha Shenoy.Terna Medical College in Navi Mumbai now charges Rs 9.13 lakh, up from Rs 7.90 lakh. Vasantrao Pawar Medical College in Nashik has increased its fee from Rs 11.96 lakh to Rs 13.16 lakh.
Against this general upward movement, the handful of reductions stands out.
K.J. Somaiya Medical College in Mumbai is listed at Rs 9.70 lakh, compared with Rs 12 lakh earlier, a reduction of Rs 2.30 lakh. MIMER Medical College, Talegaon, has marginally lowered its fee from Rs 11.30 lakh to Rs 11.06 lakh. SMBT Institute of Medical Sciences in Nashik has reduced its fee from Rs 13 lakh to Rs 12.27 lakh.
Such cases remain rare. Seven colleges have been placed under the “No Upward Revision” category, including ACPM Medical College, MIMSR Latur, Padmashri Dr Vithalrao Vikhe Patil Medical College, BKL Walawalkar Rural Medical College and SSPM Medical College. For a student entering medical college this year, the difference between the lowest and highest annual fee is Rs 9.63 lakh. The FRA-approved figures also cover only tuition and development fees. Hostel, mess, deposits and other institutional charges are additional, often turning the displayed fee into only the starting point of the family’s calculation.
