Silchar: Tension gripped Silchar’s Ghaniala area on Sunday after allegations of illegal cattle slaughter and beef sale triggered protests by local residents and Bajrang Dal members.A large crowd gathered outside a house in the locality after receiving information about the alleged activity. Protesters allegedly caught and assaulted two men suspected of involvement before police intervened.The cops brought the situation under control and took the two individuals into custody.Bajrang Dal members alleged violations of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, which regulates cattle slaughter, consumption and transportation. They demanded stringent action against those responsible and threatened a larger agitation, if appropriate legal measures were not initiated.Police said the allegations were being investigated and that all aspects of the complaint would be verified before any conclusion was drawn. Further legal action would depend on the findings, officials added.Security personnel have been deployed in the area as a precaution.
