Gurgaon: After construction of a public toilet in the greenbelt at the entrance of Sector 5 was halted following objections from residents, they are now pushing for the partially built structure to be entirely demolished and the greenbelt restored. Residents said they do not want the project to resume at any point.MCG began construction in March but halted work after residents argued that the proposed site was part of the sector’s greenbelt and should not be used for permanent construction. Work, however, resumed last week, prompting residents to write to the civic body again. An official from MCG said, “The work has been stopped. No decision has been made on the demolition of this structure. We will hold discussions with residents and try to reach an amicable solution.”Former RWA president Dinesh Vashisht said residents are not against the idea of a public toilet, but the location chosen for building one. “We want the greenbelt restored and the toilet shifted to a more suitable location, for instance, the market area close by,” he said. “Just like the conditions of many other public toilets in the city, if the facility is not managed well or remains neglected, it could lead to unhygienic conditions and safety concerns for residents,” Vashisht added.Another resident, MG Yadav, said leaving the structure in place could result in resumed construction and reasserted that the civic body should choose an alternative location after consulting the residents. “The greenbelt is an important public space and should be preserved. MCG should remove the structure completely and identify an alternative site after consulting residents,” he said.
