Mangaluru: The role of legislative council chairperson is not political in nature, said BJP MLC CT Ravi Friday. Ravi said the council has its own traditions and conventions. “It is disappointing that Congress assesses a constitutional post purely based on party numbers. Congress has forgotten that upholding the dignity and honour of the Constitution also meant protecting constitutional institutions. The list of ministers to be inducted into the cabinet also has names of legislative assembly speaker and deputy speaker. This is an attempt to weaken constitutional institutions,” Ravi said.Seeking the reasons for council chairperson Basavaraj Horatti’s resignation, Ravi said the BJP would seek an explanation on the matter.To a query on Gen Z protests against the central govt, he said protests are an integral part of democracy. “Anti-national activities carried out in the name of a protest, abusing soldiers and making derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi would change the very objective of the movement. Those who genuinely want changes in the education system would not indulge in such activities,” the MLC said.He also flayed Congress for failing to provide representation to women in the Karnataka cabinet. “Women’s empowerment has remained merely a political slogan for Congress,” he said.
