T’puram: Attingal police on Wednesday arrested a man accused of marrying women in different parts of Kerala and committing theft after gaining their trust. The accused has been identified as Babu, 60, also known as Kalyana Raman, of Kollam. Police said more than 50 cases were registered against him in various police stations across the state, ranging from Neyyattinkara in Thiruvananthapuram to Kasaragod.According to police, Babu used to target widows and women who were facing problems in their marital lives. He would approach them, gain their confidence and marry them after taking houses on rent by claiming that he had secured a job in the area. After staying with them for some time, he would identify houses in that area which were easy targets for theft and allegedly commit burglaries before disappearing.Police said he had been absconding for some time and was wanted in several theft cases, including the theft of a seven-sovereign gold necklace from an elderly woman in Thiruvananthapuram. The accused was arrested after Attingal police received information that he had been staying with a woman in Nileshwar, Kasaragod. Police later tracked his movements and found that he had recently checked into a lodge near the Attingal KSRTC bus stand.Following arrest, police handed him over to Fort police station, where he is wanted in connection with theft cases. Police said they believe the actual number of victims could be higher than the cases registered so far.“Investigators suspect that several cases may have gone unreported. We are currently examining complaints from different districts and verifying whether similar incidents elsewhere are linked to the accused,” a police source said.
