Coimbatore: Directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption (DVAC) officials on Monday arrested an assistant commissioner of the commercial tax department and her husband for allegedly accepting a bribe in the city.Abinesh, 28, an accountant at a real estate firm in the city, had applied for input tax credit with the commercial tax department. K Maheswari, 48, assistant commissioner (Singanallur) of the department, demanded Rs 1 lakh to process his application. She later reduced the demand to Rs 60,000. Abinesh filed a complaint with DVAC on Saturday.DVAC officials laid a trap and provided Abinesh with chemically laced currency notes. On Monday, Abinesh handed over the cash to Maheswari’s husband, Dhanasekaran.DVAC officials arrested Dhanasekaran while he was accepting the cash. Maheswari and Dhanasekaran were taken to the Commercial Tax office on Dr Balasundaram Road for enquiry. The couple was arrestef after registering a case.
