Chennai: A centre of excellence in sports medicine was inaugurated at Tamil Nadu govt multi super speciality hospital, Omandurar, by deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Tuesday.The centre, set up for 9 crore, will serve as a dedicated treatment centre for sports injuries, health minister Ma Subramanian said. Doctors will perform arthroscopy, a minimally invasive surgery in which a surgeon uses a thin camera and small instruments to diagnose and treat problems inside a joint, such as the knee or shoulder, for sportsmen, he said.“The state is building infrastructure that will support and encourage participation in international sports and is holding international sporting events,” he said.The Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu organised on-field sports injury management, including faculty and specialists, for national-level events held at the stadium, he said.“For higher-level care, there are facilities in private hospitals. Tamil Nadu will have the facility to treat sports injuries at govt hospitals. This will ensure facilities for learning sports and treating injuries remain accessible and affordable to all,” he said.
