Buxar: The family of Anand Kumar, the 23-year-old BTech gold medallist who allegedly died by suicide in Kanpur after failing to secure a govt job despite around 50 attempts, left his native village in Bihar’s Buxar district after receiving news of the tragedy.Anand’s father, Rajkumar Lohia, had arrived at Rupsagar village under Nawanagar police station on Friday to finalise the marriage of his elder son when the family learned about the incident.Anand had topped the BTech (electrical engineering) programme at a private engineering college in 2024 and secured the third rank in Uttar Pradesh. He was awarded a gold medal at a college function on Aug 13, 2024.Rajkumar’s father, Harishankar Shah, a retired engineer who had settled in Kanpur years ago, was also in the village. The family immediately left for Kanpur.The death has cast a pall of gloom over Rupsagar, where Anand’s academic achievements had brought immense pride. “The entire family is well educated. When Anand won the gold medal, not only his family but the entire village felt proud of his achievement. His death has left everyone in deep sorrow,” village mukhiya Brij Kumar Singh said.Anand allegedly died by suicide at his house in Kanpur on Friday. According to his purported suicide note, he apologised repeatedly to his father, writing that he had failed to secure a govt job despite trying nearly 50 times.The incident came to light when the family’s domestic help arrived at the house around 1pm and found the door locked from inside. After getting no response, she informed the family and the police. Officers later broke open the door and found Anand hanging from a ceiling fan.
