Patna: Bihar’s Cybercrime and Security Unit (CCSU) has registered 475 FIRs and arrested 103 people in the first six months of 2026 as part of a major crackdown on the misuse of social media. During the period, 1,320 objectionable posts and URLs were removed, while 529 fake and objectionable social media accounts were deactivated or deleted.SP (investigation and operation) Rajesh Kumar said the unit had been carrying out round-the-clock surveillance of social media platforms to identify cyber offences and content that threatened public order and social harmony. The drive has focused on fake profiles created in the names of women and girls, obscene and defamatory posts, AI-generated and deepfake material, fake news, communal content and objectionable posts targeting constitutional authorities, the judiciary and other public institutions.According to data released by the CCSU on Sunday, 692 legal notices were issued to social media platforms from Jan till date. On the basis of digital evidence, technical analysis and social media intelligence, the identified accounts, pages and channels were referred to cyber police stations and district police for legal action.Police acted in cases involving cyberstalking, online harassment, morphed photographs, obscene posts and other crimes against women. Proceedings were also initiated against people accused of creating and circulating objectionable AI-generated photographs, videos and voice recordings.Authorities also targeted fake news, rumours and misleading posts that could trigger confusion, tension and unrest. Content threatening communal harmony or promoting hostility between communities was identified and removed following legal intervention.Rajesh said several cases had been solved with the help of digital evidence and technical analysis, leading to the identification and arrest of the accused. FIRs were registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, the Information Technology Act, 2000, and other relevant provisions.The unit has urged people to use digital platforms responsibly and warned that cyber harassment of women, fake profiles, circulation of obscene material, deepfake content and fake news are serious and punishable offences. Officials said strict action would continue against those trying to disrupt law and order, social harmony and the dignity of women through social media.
