Jind: A controversy has erupted in Jind after the Haryana govt selected singer Masoom Sharma as the chief performer and brand ambassador for an upcoming anti-drug campaign event, prompting local khap panchayats to issue an ultimatum threatening to block the programme.The event, scheduled for Sept 27 at Chaudhary Ranbir Singh University (CRSU) in Jind, is jointly organised by the Jind police and district administration, according to official promotional material.Khap leaders and social media critics expressed outrage over the choice, pointing out that several of Sharma’s songs have been banned previously for glorifying gun culture and vulgarity.“Masoom Sharma has remained associated with controversies,” said Samundar Phour, spokesperson for Majra Khap, alleging that the artiste has no connection with culture or values and “only creates controversy over everything.” More than 15 of his tracks have been banned in the state, he added.Phour further alleged that most of Sharma’s past tracks promote substance abuse, warning that khaps would take to the streets if the event is not cancelled.Responding to the growing friction, media coordinator to the chief minister Ashok Chhabra stated that senior administrative officials would be consulted to review the situation and determine the next steps regarding the scheduled event.
