Chandigarh/Amritsar: Former Khadoor Sahib MLA Ravinder Singh Brahampura joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday, days after being expelled from the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) for alleged anti-party activities. Chief minister Bhagwant Mann formally inducted him into the party at his official residence.Brahampura, son of late SAD leader and former MP Ranjit Singh Brahampura, said his decision was not driven by a desire for power or position. “My politics is not for power, but to serve the people,” he said, adding that he wanted to work for the development of his constituency.He also praised initiatives of the Mann govt, particularly the Satkaar Act aimed at preventing sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib and the state’s campaign against drugs.Brahampura had won the Khadoor Sahib by-election in Feb 2016 on an SAD ticket but lost the 2017 Assembly election to Congress’s Ramanjeet Singh Sahota Sikki by over 17,000 votes. AAP’s Manjinder Singh Lalpura is the sitting MLA from the constituency.SAD expelled Brahampura from its primary membership around a week ago, citing alleged anti-party activities, amid differences over local party appointments in Khadoor Sahib.He had left the SAD in 2018 with other veteran leaders to form the Shiromani Akali Dal (Taksali), which later merged with the Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyukt). He rejoined the SAD in late 2021.Brahampura joined AAP along with his son Kanwardeep Singh Brahampura and other local leaders and supporters.Mann recalled the contribution of Ranjit Singh Brahampura to Punjab and Panthic politics and paid tribute to his legacy. Ranjit Singh Brahampura had unsuccessfully contested the 2022 Assembly election from Khadoor Sahib on an SAD ticket and died in Dec 2022.
