Chennai: Former BJP state president K Annamalai on Friday alleged that there were discrepancies in the crime statsistics released by the Tamil Nadu govt officials.Annamalai said that according to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, 1,686 murder cases were registered in Tamil Nadu in 2021. However, the home secretary had claimed during the press interaction on Thursday that the number of murder cases for the year 2021 was 1,597, he said.“When you can manipulate already published data that was submitted by the Govt of TN in 2021, why should anyone trust the data given by you for 2024 and 2025 that you have not published till date?” Annamalai asked. His remarks came after senior state officials, including home secretary Dheeraj Kumar held a press conference to defend the state govt’s efforts to prevent crime and safeguard law and order. The press coference was held in the wake of series of incidents of violence and cases of sexual assault on women. He also questioned why chief minister MK Stalin, who holds the home portfolio, was not responding directly to the issue. On such matters, the chief minister should provide an explanation to the people of the state, he added.
