Udupi: Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with GHCL Ltd, a leading chemical company, to develop a Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS)-based solution for real-time monitoring of the Gross Calorific Value (GCV) of carbon-based fuels.The MoU was exchanged on Friday between MAHE registrar P Giridhar Kini and Sanjay Gupta, vice-president (commercial), GHCL, following discussions between representatives of the two institutions.According to a release, the collaboration will integrate advanced spectroscopy with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to create a rapid, on-site fuel quality assessment system. The project aims to replace conventional fuel-testing methods, which are often time-consuming, with a data-driven solution that enables quicker operational decision-making.Mayuresh Hede, operations head, GHCL’s Sutrapada plant, said the partnership reflects the company’s focus on adopting technologies that improve operational efficiency and sustainability. “By integrating real-time analytics into fuel quality management, we aim to enhance process efficiency while reducing uncertainties associated with conventional testing methods. We believe this initiative can set new benchmarks for quality assurance in industrial operations,” he said.MAHE vice-chancellor Sharath K Rao said the project demonstrates how academic research can address complex industrial challenges. “By combining LIBS technology with AI and ML, we are developing an innovative solution with significant scientific and commercial potential. The collaboration also provides an excellent platform for translational research that can benefit multiple energy-intensive sectors,” he said.The project is being led at MAHE by Unnikrishnan VK of the Manipal Institute of Applied Physics as principal investigator. Prof Karunakar Kotegar, pro vice-chancellor (technology and science), assured institutional support for the initiative.Sajan Daniel George, director, Manipal Institute of Applied Physics, and Harishkumar, director of corporate relations, MAHE, were also present.
