Ahmedabad: An unidentified thief allegedly broke into a house in Navrangpura by widening the iron grille outside a first-floor window and fled with gold and diamond jewellery and cash with a total value of Rs 7 lakh, police said.A complaint was filed on Thursday by the 75-year-old houseowner who runs an iron trading business. He lives with his wife, son and daughter-in-law.The theft came to light around 7.30am when the businessman was sitting in the garden. His son informed him that a cupboard and dressing-table drawer in his room were open and household items had been scattered.They later checked the first-floor sitting room and found a window open. The iron grille outside it had been widened, suggesting that someone had entered the house through the gap.The family then checked the bedrooms on the second floor. According to the complaint, the businessman’s son had returned home from a friend’s house around 12.30am and had kept cash in his pocket and wallet. His wife had kept her jewellery in the dressing-table drawer.The stolen items included a diamond-studded gold ring weighing about 4.2 grams and valued at around Rs 2.5 lakh, a gold bangle weighing about 8.87 grams and valued at around Rs 3.5 lakh, a diamond-studded gold bracelet valued at about Rs 70,000, and around Rs 20,000 in cash.Police registered a theft complaint and began examining the house and nearby area. The complaint states the theft took place between 12.30am and 7.30am on Aug 27.
