Ahmedabad: The detection of crime branch on Monday filed a complaint over the deposit of 1,483 fake currency notes with a face value of Rs 4.9 lakh in 15 banks in Ahmedabad. The seizure was made following a complaint filed on Monday by a Special Operations Group officer.According to investigators, the fake notes were detected in multiple nationalized, private, and cooperative banks. Police said sealed envelopes containing suspected fake notes were sent by these banks to the crime branch for verification and legal action. In the presence of witnesses, officials opened the packets and conducted a detailed panchnama, seizing the counterfeit currency. The recovered notes included denominations of Rs 2,000, Rs 500, Rs 200, Rs 100, Rs 50, Rs 20, and Rs 10. Most of the notes were of Rs 500 denomination, totalling more than 800 pieces. Officials said many notes were found to be crudely made, showing poor print quality, mismatched serial numbers, glued portions, torn edges, and amateurish markings. “The notes appeared to be coloured photocopies or tampered pieces. Some had adhesive tape and visible alterations,” a police officer said. “Several notes had already been stamped as fake by banks.” Police said that some persons, as yet unidentified, circulated these counterfeit notes in the banking system before March 31, 2025, as part of a larger conspiracy to destabilize the economy. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and further investigation is underway to trace the network behind the fake currency racket.
