T’puram: Adani ports will build a container freight station (CFS) on 100 acres near the port to handle Exim containers when cargo movement picks up. A CFS is important for a port to carry out Exim operations as goods in containers need to be screened, sorted and repacked.When the port starts Exim operations on Aug 18, only full-load containers will be brought by road and from the ship to road as there is no CFS at present. It will be impossible for traders to bring mixed cargo booked to different locations in a single container as containers arriving by ship and those brought by road to the port cannot be opened.“The port will build a CFS when Exim operation picks up and stabilizes. It is part of the future expansion plan,” said an official.

The port is now building additional berths by reclaiming land. It is estimated that 30% of the port’s containers will be Exim cargo, which will be moved by road initially and later by rail once the 10km line connecting the port to the main railway network is completed in four years.State govt is supposed to construct a CFS, warehouses and logistics part at Vizhinjam and land acquisition or leasing has started. MoUs have been signed with public sector undertakings to set up facilities that will help traders import and export goods through the port.There is also a possibility of setting up a temporary facility depending on the quantity of Exim movement through the port by road. MSMEs in Coimbatore, Tiruppur and Tirunelveli are ready to leverage the port to export their goods instead of routing them by rail and road to distant ports — a process that is time-consuming and prone to delays.After a review meeting, customs had given its final clearance for handling Exim containers with restrictions as a CFS is not available.
