AASU Calls for PM Visit, Special Package and Scientific Probe into Assam FloodsGuwahati: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Tuesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to announce a special economic package for the flood-ravaged districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat, while seeking a high-level fact-finding committee to determine the causes of the unprecedented floods in upper Assam and recommend a permanent solution.“Announce a special economic package for the severely affected districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat to ensure comprehensive relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction. Constitute a high-level fact-finding committee comprising independent experts to ascertain the causes of this catastrophe and prepare a time-bound roadmap for a permanent and scientific solution,” Aasu president Utpal Sarma and general secretary Samiran Phukan wrote in the letter mailed to the PM, urging him to personally visit the flood-affected areas of Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat at the earliest.They also demanded Modi to declare the flood and erosion problem of Assam as a National Problem, warranting sustained national commitment and intervention for permanent solution of the problem. “The people of Assam have witnessed your frequent visits to the state during election campaigns. At this hour of unprecedented suffering, they equally deserve your presence, solidarity and assurance,” they wrote to Modi.
