Shillong: The state cabinet approved the Meghalaya Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2026 to promote clean and sustainable mobility in the state by introducing more electric vehicles for public conveyance.“To encourage the adoption of electric vehicles, the government will provide an incentive of Rs 25,000 to every individual purchasing an electric vehicle, along with a complete waiver of vehicle registration fees,” said chief minister Conrad K Sangma after presiding over the cabinet meeting on Monday.“This policy reflects our commitment to building a greener Meghalaya by reducing emissions, encouraging clean transportation, and making electric mobility more accessible and affordable for our citizens, the chief minister explained.The cabinet also approved Rs 22.37 crore towards land compensation for the construction of the 132 kV D/C transmission line from the 220/132 kV Saisiej Sub-station to the proposed 132/33 kV, 2×50 MVA Mawkhanu Sub-station.The approval also includes compensation for the Right of Way (RoW) required for the transmission corridor.“This critical infrastructure project will strengthen the state’s power transmission network, improve electricity reliability, and support the growing energy needs of Meghalaya,” the chief minister said.The amendment to the New Shillong Township Development Agency into the New Shillong Development Authority (NSDA) was approved by the cabinet, amending the New Township Development Agency Rules, 2012.“This marks an important step towards strengthening urban planning, governance and infrastructure development in New Shillong. With greater authority and institutional capacity, the NSDA will play a pivotal role in shaping a well-planned and sustainable city for the people of Meghalaya,” the chief minister said.The cabinet further approved the Meghalaya Border Areas Development Department (Research Wing) Service Rules 2026 and also approved the nomination of VIPs to take the salute on Independence Day at various locations in the state.
