Agartala: City-based classical musician Joyanta Sarkar has secured a patent for ‘Tripureswari Veena’, a string instrument that “combines the traditional principles of the veena with local craftsmanship, folk music, and the artistic heritage of Tripura”.Sarkar said, “Tripureswari Veena blends Indian classical music with Tripura’s artistic heritage, science, and philosophical influences. Inspired by Mata Tripureswari, the revered deity of Tripura and one of India’s 51 Shakti Peethas, the instrument seeks to preserve and promote the cultural identity inherent to Tripura.”“This creation beautifully marries spirituality, culture, science, and innovation, reflecting the state’s vibrant history while providing a modern musical tool for future artists. The Tripureswari Veena is characterised as an updated Indian classical string instrument that integrates elements of the traditional slide guitar with the rich sounds of classical instruments like the veena, sitar, and sarod,” he added.It uses vibration, resonance, acoustics, harmonics, and wave motion to produce a distinctive and expressive sound suitable for complex Indian ragas. Its strings resonate when corresponding notes are played, creating a deep and enduring tonal richness, he stated.
