Chandigarh: A 50-year-old assistant sub-inspector (ASI) posted with the Chandigarh Police crime branch allegedly died by suicide at his govt accommodation in Sector 42 on Tuesday night. No suicide note was recovered from the spot, police said.The deceased, Satpal Singh, was working as a malkhana munshi with the crime branch. He had returned home on Tuesday afternoon after completing his shift and was alone as other family members had gone to attend a wedding.Later in the evening, when family members repeatedly called Satpal but received no response, they contacted neighbours and asked them to check on him.The neighbours found the house locked from inside and alerted the police control room on 112. Police reached the spot, broke open the door and found the ASI hanging inside a room.He was taken to hospital, where doctors declared him dead. On Wednesday, Sector 36 police handed it over to the family after the autopsy.Police initiated inquest proceedings and are recording statements of Satpal’s family members and colleagues to ascertain the circumstances surrounding his death.
