Bokaro: Around 250 reports involving malicious APK files disguised as marriage invitations or electricity bills were received in Bokaro in Sept, prompting police to launch a citywide banner-and-poster campaign.In most cases, no FIRs were registered because alert residents did not make transactions after receiving the suspicious files and instead informed police verbally or through messages.“The pattern is concerning, and we have decided to intensify awareness among residents to prevent such frauds,” DSP (Headquarters) Pawan Kumar said on Thursday.Kumar said police were adopting technology-driven and awareness-based measures to tackle cybercrime. “We observed that malicious APK files are emerging as a major tool used by cyber fraudsters to target victims,” he added.Police will install banners and posters at prominent locations across the city, urging residents not to install APK files received through unknown links, messages or other suspicious sources.Police are also seeking to improve case disposal within the prescribed 60- and 90-day timelines. Investigating officers have been directed to improve the quality of investigations, expedite the arrest of absconding accused and maintain action against anti-social elements.Police station officers in charge have been instructed to promptly dispose of pending cases, adopt a citizen-friendly approach towards complainants and intensify action against illegal liquor, drugs and gambling. Court-related cases will be prioritised and compliance with the directives regularly reviewed.Court-related cases will also be handled on priority, with regular reviews planned to monitor compliance with the directives, cops said.
