Nagpur: Around 45 protesters were detained on Wednesday night after they allegedly refused to vacate Samvidhan Square beyond the permitted protest hours, prompting police to use a mild cane charge to disperse the gathering.The protest was staged to demand justice over the alleged lathi charge on demonstrators in Delhi. Police granted permission from 5 pm to 8 pm, but a section of the protesters remained at the venue even after the stipulated time, said police.Jt CP Navinchandra Reddy said the CJP members left the spot on time but some protesters from other outfits entered the spot and started creating a ruckus. “Legal actions have been initiated,” said Reddy.Police officers maintained that action was taken only after repeated requests to vacate the venue went unheeded. As per police sources, protesters sat together in a group and began singing the national anthem while resisting attempts to clear the area.As the standoff continued, police resorted to a mild cane charge to remove the protesters. Around 45 protesters were detained and taken into custody, sources said.By the time of going to press, police were in the process of registering offences against the organisers for allegedly violating the conditions of the permission. The exact sections under which the case would be registered were not officially confirmed.
