Nagpur: Incessant rainfall since Monday night has left several parts of Nagpur battling slushy roads and waterlogged stretches, disrupting daily life and exposing persistent infrastructure gaps. While several localities under Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) are struggling with unpaved internal roads, residents in an NMC-maintained locality in West Nagpur have also complained of dangerous road conditions caused by mud accumulation.In North Nagpur, kutcha roads in several NIT layouts have turned into slippery tracks after continuous rain, making commuting hazardous. Though widespread waterlogging was not reported, the lack of permanent roads has left two-wheelers skidding, pedestrians wading through ankle-deep slush and emergency vehicles facing difficulty in accessing interior localities.The worst-hit areas include Swami Nagar, Bhakti Sagar Nagar, Jai Bhim Nagar, Santa Nagar, Dhammjyoti Nagar, Malka Colony, Patel Nagar, Madhav Nagar and Samrat Ashok Nagar. Residents said the problem recurs every monsoon as road development works in these layouts remain incomplete despite repeated representations.Congress corporator from Prabhag 2 Dinesh Yadav alleged that thousands of residents in North Nagpur continue to suffer due to the absence of basic infrastructure. “Every monsoon, these localities are cut off by muddy roads. Despite repeated demands, there has been little effort to provide permanent roads and proper drainage,” he said.In Nari village’s Gaikwad Layout and adjoining Mayur Nagar, residents also reported water accumulation on roads and in low-lying open areas, claiming that poor drainage has aggravated the situation after the latest spell of rain.The problem is not confined to NIT areas. In New Mankapur under Prabhag 11, residents sought immediate intervention from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) after a muddy stretch outside Trimurti Apartment became accident-prone.Valley D’Souza, a resident of New Mankapur, said two-wheelers have been slipping regularly on the muddy road. “Scooters are skidding and even cars are losing traction. We have requested the NMC to immediately spread murum to make the stretch motorable until permanent repairs are carried out,” he said. According to him, the road was developed by the NMC earlier but has deteriorated after the recent rains.Residents across the affected localities said while flooding has remained limited so far, the absence of all-weather roads and inadequate maintenance have become the primary concerns. They warned that a spell of heavier rain could worsen the situation by triggering waterlogging in addition to the existing slush.Citizens have urged the NIT and NMC to undertake immediate temporary repairs by laying murum, filling potholes and improving drainage, while expediting long-pending road works before the monsoon intensifies further. The latest rainfall has once again highlighted the civic infrastructure deficit in several developing neighbourhoods, where residents say they endure the same ordeal year after year.
