Aizawl: Compensation totalling Rs 1.28 crore was distributed to 29 victims of crime in Mizoram’s Kolasib district on Friday under the Mizoram Victims of Crime Compensation Scheme, 2011.Gauhati High Court judge and Mizoram State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA) executive chairperson Justice Nelson Sailo handed over the compensation at a sensitisation programme held at the UD&PA Conference Hall in Diakkawn, Kolasib.Addressing the beneficiaries, Justice Sailo said the assistance was intended to support families affected by unfortunate incidents. He urged them to use the money prudently, particularly for their children’s welfare and education.Financial compensation could not erase the emotional suffering caused by a tragedy, he said, but could help affected families rebuild their lives.Kolasib deputy commissioner H. Dolianbuaia also advised the beneficiaries to prioritise their children’s welfare and long-term needs instead of spending the money on immediate wants.Kolasib district Chief Judicial Magistrate and District Legal Services Authority secretary V Vanlalhriata said the compensation could help families meet expenses related to children’s education and future requirements, including higher education and marriage.Since the scheme was introduced, the MSLSA has disbursed Rs 16.68 crore in compensation. A further Rs 51.25 lakh sanctioned through awards issued after 2025 is awaiting release by the state govt.District Legal Services Authorities continue to receive fresh applications and issue new compensation awards, officials said.Before the programme, Justice Sailo visited the Kolasib District Prison and Correctional Home and inspected the ongoing facilities. He urged inmates to use their time constructively and prepare to return to society as responsible citizens.Later, he inspected the under-construction fast track court building at Project Veng in Kolasib.
