Mangaluru: Kankanady Town police have registered a suo motu case against two rival groups of rowdy-sheeters after they allegedly gathered at a public place in Kannur and attempted to trigger a gang war by brandishing swords and issuing death threats.According to the complaint, police received information that on Sept 9 around 11pm to 11.30pm, rowdy-sheeter Deal Naufal and associates of the deceased Toppi Naufal had arrived in Kannur in two cars and allegedly tried to engage in a gang fight on a public road while carrying swords.To verify the information, police immediately went to Ganadabettu Junction in Kannur village and gathered information about the incident.Police learnt that between 11pm and 11.30pm on Sept 9, Deal Naufal, along with his associates Ammi, Kottu Nizam and others, and another group comprising rowdy-sheeters Ansar, Asif alias Moppu Achi, Iqbal alias Papu and others, who were allegedly associates of Toppi Naufal, had parked their cars at the public place.The two groups, allegedly acting out of a previous enmity, were carrying lethal weapons, including swords, and allegedly brandished them while threatening to kill each other. They also allegedly threatened to kill anyone who approached the police or lodged a complaint about the incident.Police said members of the public were reluctant to lodge complaints against the rowdy-sheeters due to fear. Considering the incident serious from the perspective of maintaining law and order, police registered a suo motu case against the accused. They have been booked for forming an unlawful assembly at a public place, carrying lethal weapons, creating fear among the public, issuing death threats, disturbing public peace and attempting to trigger a gang war. Further investigation is under way.
