Bhubaneswar: A 108 ambulance pharmacist helped a woman deliver the second of her twin babies at Kenduguda village in Kalahandi district on Friday evening after poor road conditions prevented the ambulance from reaching her house.Official sources on Saturday said the emergency team from the Charbahal-based 108 ambulance was despatched after receiving a call to shift the expectant mother to hospital. The vehicle reached the area quickly but had to halt about 1 km away because the approach road was narrow, uneven and unfit for ambulance movement.Pharmacist Purnachandra Sabar, driver Ajit Sabar and assistant Prashant Kumar Yadav then carried a stretcher, delivery kit and other medical equipment on foot to reach the house. On arrival, they found the woman had already given birth to a baby at home and was experiencing labour pain for the second delivery.Sabar said he immediately used the delivery kit and assisted the woman in safely delivering the second baby. He also provided post-delivery care, including cutting the umbilical cord, checking the newborns and monitoring the mother’s condition before shifting them from the house.After stabilising the the woman and both babies, the team carried the trio by stretcher to the waiting ambulance before ferrying them to the govt hospital at Jaipatna for further treatment and observation.Officials said response was crucial as any delay could have increased risks for the mother and newborns. The team followed emergency protocol at the spot and ensured the family was safely transferred without further complications, despite having to move through the stretch manually in the evening hours.Hospital sources said the mother and the twin babies were safe. Authorities appreciated Sabar and the ambulance staff for their prompt action and for ensuring emergency care despite difficult terrain and lack of motorable access to the house.
