Few foods have a more intimidating reputation than Japanese fugu. The pufferfish contains tetrodotoxin, a potent neurotoxin, meaning preparation requires specialised knowledge. Historically, poisoning made the fish genuinely dangerous, and authorities including Toyotomi Hideyoshi banned its consumption at different points. Today, properly prepared fugu is a celebrated Japanese delicacy.
