Chandigarh: Chandigarh Police’s operation cell has busted an alleged interstate arms racket, arresting five persons, including a double MA degree holder and another postgraduate in economics.Police seized six pistols, including three automatic weapons, 19 live cartridges and two magazines, besides tracing a money trail of around Rs 2 lakh linked to the alleged procurement of arms.The investigation began with the arrest of Gurcharan Singh alias GC of Rajasthan’s Deeg district. Police said Gurcharan, a double MA in economics, was a key link in the network. Two countrymade pistols, three cartridges and a magazine were seized from him.The probe then led to the arrest of Gurbachan Singh alias Guri of Dadu Majra, an economics postgraduate who runs a computer centre. Police recovered an automatic pistol and 10 cartridges from him.Subsequent raids led to the arrest of Pushpendra alias Bhura, Sarwan alias Soli and Lokesh Meena. During questioning, Lokesh allegedly revealed an arms supply link in Madhya Pradesh.Police said the accused procured weapons from a supplier known as “Paji” in Madhya Pradesh and sold them in Chandigarh. Investigators suspect 10-12 illegal weapons may have reached the city through the network. Efforts are on to identify buyers, trace other members of the racket and arrest the alleged supplier.
