Guwahati: Singer Zubeen Garg’s wife Garima Saikia Garg on Friday welcomed state cabinet’s decision to request the Gauhati high court to set up a fast-track court for the trial of the singer’s death case.Garima said the family, along with Zubeen’s fans and well-wishers, want “strictest possible punishment” for those responsible for his death.
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a post-cabinet briefing on Thursday, said the Cabinet resolved to seek a fast-track court following a request from Garg’s family, though govt was satisfied with the progress in the existing court.Zubeen died on Sept 19 last year while swimming in the sea in Singapore. The CID’s Special Investigation Team, which probed the case, has filed a chargesheet naming seven accused, including the singer’s manager Siddharth Sharma and his bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami.Reacting to the Cabinet move, Garima said, “We want the case to proceed in a water-tight manner and the most stringent punishment for the accused. We hope the judge considers this a special case.”She added that none of those who loved Zubeen wanted the accused to secure bail — a remark made amid the CM’s allegation that a media group and the Congress were attempting to influence the case to secure bail for the accused ahead of the elections.Garima reiterated that the SIT’s “flawless” investigation had clearly identified the culprits, and the family had sought a special court to ensure swift and conclusive trial proceedings. Her statement comes after she and special public prosecutor Ziaul Kamar expressed dissatisfaction on Feb 16 over the slow progress in Kamrup Metropolitan district and sessions court, where the trial is yet to begin.
