Aizawl: Ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM)’s Lok Sabha member Richard Vanlalhmangaiha will oppose the proposed amendment to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) in Parliament if the central government does not accept the suggestions of the Mizoram government, state Chief Minister Lalduhoma said.A consultation meeting was held at the Chief Minister’s official residence in Aizawl on Saturday with Lalduhoma and leaders of the Council of Churches Mizoram (CCM) and the Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitute Committee (MKHC), a conglomerate of leaders of 16 major church denominations. The Chief Minister was accompanied by two advisers, Lalmuanpuia Punte and TBC Lalvenchhunga.“The meeting deliberated on the provisions of the proposed amendment to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) with open minds, and decided that the provisions of the amendment bill cannot be accepted in toto.”

It was also agreed that the state government would draft a memorandum with suggestions for changes and modifications, and that Lalduhoma would seek a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The meeting decided to send a delegation comprising the Chief Minister and representatives of the CCM and the MKHC to meet Shah in Delhi.Earlier, addressing a public meeting in North Kawrthah village in Mamit district bordering Tripura on Friday, Lalduhoma said that the people of Mizoram—especially churches and NGOs receiving foreign contributions—“could not fully agree with the provisions of the proposed amendment to the FCRA” and said a consultation would be held with church representatives.“If the central government refuses to alter the proposals from Mizoram, the lone Lok Sabha member from the state will be instructed to oppose the amendment bill,” he said.
