Shillong: The Shillong Traffic Police has launched a special enforcement drive titled ‘Operation Free Flow’ to ease traffic movement across the city amid rising congestion.The drive was launched “in view of the increasing instances of haphazard parking causing traffic congestion, obstruction of carriageways and inconvenience to road users”, said Vivek Syiem, the superintendent of police, East Khasi Hills, Shillong, in an official statement issued on Friday.Police said haphazard parking is most common in congested areas with narrow roads and limited room for manoeuvring. The drive aims to curb indiscriminate roadside parking and target vehicles left in no-parking zones or in ways that block traffic flow.To implement the campaign, police have formed a dedicated Shillong Traffic Enforcement Team, or STET, which will conduct intensive checks across the city. Authorities said enforcement will be strict and impartial, with exceptions only for genuine emergencies or medical exigencies.

SP Syiem said the objective is not only to penalise violators but also to promote “responsible parking behaviour, improve traffic discipline and ensure safer, more efficient roads” for all.The Shillong Traffic Police appealed for public cooperation, urging residents to follow traffic rules, park responsibly and encourage others to do the same, stressing that disciplined road use is key to reducing congestion and restoring free flow of traffic in the city.
