Nagpur: Pachpaoli cops on Sunday arrested a 23-year-old man who purchased an illegal country-made pistol to commit suicide, following repeated failed attempts to end his life. The arrest was triggered after the youth posted a photograph of himself with the firearm on social media, which quickly came to the notice of Pachpaoli police team led by senior inspector Baburao Raut. On Saturday night, acting on a tip-off, Pachpaoli detection team intercepted Syed Mazahir Ali Jafri near the Pachpaoli Railway Gate. Jafri, a resident of Shanti Nagar, was found carrying a country-made pistol valued at around 10,000. During interrogation, the accused revealed that unemployment, personal distress, and multiple unsuccessful suicide attempts, including consuming poison, drove him to acquire the firearm to end his life. Jafri reportedly paid 15,000 to his accomplice, Shahrukh Khan (30), from Taj Nagar, who supplied the weapon. After the recent death of his father, the youth claimed he dropped the plan to commit suicide and attempted to return the pistol. Shahrukh allegedly refused to refund the money, leading the accused to keep it. In a moment of impulse, he shared a photo of himself with the firearm on social media, a post that inadvertently alerted the police and led to his arrest under the supervision of Zonal DCP Rahul Madane. Police also recovered a mobile phone worth 35,000 from his possession. A case was registered against both under Sections 3 and 25 of the Arms Act and Section 135 of the Maharashtra Police Act. Jafri was arrested on the spot, while Shahrukh Khan remains absconding.
