Kolkata: A day after CM Suvendu Adhikari on Monday warned against child marriage, the husband of a minor girl was arrested under the Pocso Act after she gave birth to a child on Tuesday.The husband was produced before a city court that remanded him in judicial custody till Sept 22.Cops from the Shyampukur PS arrested the youth after the hospital, where the teenaged girl gave birth, found from her Aadhaar card that she was a minor. Police said the girl had been living at her in-laws’ place on Shyambazar area ever since she and the arrested youth got married last year.The CM on Monday warned that underage couples and parents would lose benefits from the govt’s welfare schemes and face penal action under BNS as well as the Pocso Act. He said 60,000 teenage pregnancies were reported in Bengal in the first six months of 2026, with Murshidabad (12,847) topping the list. “The situation is terrible. We will certainly file cases and make arrests. It must be stopped,” Adhikari told reporters after a meeting at Nabanna.
