Season 1 of Your Friends & Neighbors ended with the hedge fund manager turned-thief, Coop, (Jon Hamm), turning his back on the chance to return to his old life. At the beginning of Season 2, Coop is in a happy place, on vacation in Mexico with his ex-wife, Mel (Amanda Peet) and children, Tori (Isabel Marie Gravitt) and Hunter (Donovan Colan).

Your Friends & Neighbors (English, Season 2)

Creator: Jonathan Tropper

Starring: Jon Hamm, Amanda Peet, Olivia Munn, Hoon Lee, Mark Tallman, Lena Hall, Aimee Carrero, Eunice Bae, Isabel Marie Gravitt, Donavan Colan, James Marsden

Runtime: 10 episodes (46 – 56 minutes)

Storyline: Just as Coop is getting a version of his life back on an even keel, a charming stranger upsets the applecart

Coop has an office in town and continues to rob, using information about his neighbours’ whereabouts from the feisty housekeeper, Elena (Aimee Carrero), and offloading the stolen goods to pawnshop owner Lu (Randy Danson), whom he has made up with after the upset last season.

And then everything goes wrong, starting with the arrival of the flamboyant billionaire Owen Ashe (James Marsden) in Westmont. A widower with a teenage daughter, Delilah (Erin Robinson), Ashe has the Westmont community wildly speculating about the source of his affluence with murmurs of arms dealing.

He also gets Sam (Olivia Munn) from the naughty to the nice list, much to the community’s amazement and Mel’s fury, given that Sam almost succeeded in framing Coop for her husband’s death and caused Mel to lose her job.

Mel has other problems, including writer’s block, perimenopause, and a neighbour’s unruly dog. Tori does not know whether she wants to go to Princeton, while Hunter begins to date Delilah. Coop’s bipolar sister, Ali (Lena Hall), takes up the chance to teach music at Tori and Hunter’s school, though Coop does not think it a good idea.

Coop’s business manager, Barney (Hoon Lee), wants in on Coop’s thieving as a form of rebellion against his overbearing in-laws. In the midst of all this, there is yet another chance for Coop to return to his corporate raider avatar, a life that fits him as well as his well-cut suits.

Your Friends & Neighbors continues to merrily walk the line between satire, comedy and human drama. It is as much about the high life as about parenting and expectations. Losing his father, Ron (Michael O’Keefe), forces Coop to examine his contributions to his children’s lives.

As Ron tells Coop, “It’s hard when you reach the point where you can’t protect your kids the way you used to.” Going through his father’s things, a reflection of his simple lifestyle, Coop sees the Cartier cufflinks he presented his father, still in their box and muses, “Gifts tell more about the giver than the receiver, and I didn’t like what it said about me.”

Growing old is a thread running through the season, with an episode even called “We Were Never Supposed to Get This Old”. When Jack Bailey (Corbin Bernsen), Coop’s boss from his high-finance days tells him, “Not too long ago I was you,” it is a warning and an acknowledgement. And Coop’s back giving out at inopportune moments is a reminder of Time’s winged chariot hurrying near.

The writing continues to excel and, in Coop, brought magnificently to life by Hamm, the show has created a fascinating character. Coop is seen differently by the people he encounters. According to Ashe, he has a “suburban James Bond vibe” while Mel says he “presents as an all-American, classic alpha male, but just beneath the surface he’s a giant simmering mess of a man child.” Coop chooses to describe himself with Walt Whitman’s “I contain multitudes.”

Elena’s arc is not very satisfying, as she seems to have no agency and is buffeted this way and that by her brother’s bad choices and random drug dealers. The title sequence continues to astound. It encourages you to watch rather than opt for “skip intro”.

In between all the meditations on life, the universe, and everything, there are confidences in the sauna, sex on blindingly beautiful yachts in Greece, an accidental death, which is hidden and threatens to resurface, car-jiutsu, copious quantities of cocaine, classic movies, a kidnapping, a threat, and some very shady, powerful puppet masters.

When Coop says, “No matter how comfortable we get with them, there will eventually be a reckoning with all the lies we tell,” we know what to expect in Season 3, which has already confirmed Joshua Jackson and Michelle Monaghan in the cast. And that fisherman right at the end just caught a glimpse of a submerged car.
