Mangaluru: The National Institute of Technology Karnataka Surathkal, successfully organised a one-day workshop on Krishna River Basin Management Studies on Monday. The event was organised under the aegis of the department of water resources, river development and Ganga rejuvenation, ministry of Jal Shakti, govt of India, through its National River Conservation Directorate (NRCD) and the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG). The Centre for Krishna River Basin Management Studies (cKrishna), housed at NITK Surathkal, served as the organising body.The workshop brought together over 50 participants, including academicians, govt officials, PhD scholars, PG students, and key stakeholders engaged in water resource management across the Krishna River Basin. Discussions centred on interdisciplinary research areas such as hydrology, ecology, water quality, land use, geomorphology, socio-economic impacts, and stakeholder engagement. Technical sessions and interactive forums enabled the exchange of data-driven insights, GIS-based mapping methodologies, and modelling approaches aimed at evaluating the river’s ecological health and sustainability.The establishment of cKrishna is part of a wider initiative involving a memorandum of agreement between the ministry of Jal Shakti, IIT Kanpur, and the consortium of NIT Warangal and NITK Surathkal. The Centre was entrusted with implementing the ‘Conditional Assessment and Management Plan for Krishna River (CAMP)’, with a broader mandate to develop a dynamic and integrated river basin management plan.Led by principal investigator Basavaraju Manu, HoD of civil engineering, NITK Surathkal, the cKrishna team includes members of the advisory committee S Shrihari, GS Dwarakish, and Lakshman Nandagiri alongside co-principal investigators and dedicated project staff of NITK Surathkal. Their collective expertise continues to drive strategic interventions for restoring the wholesomeness of the Krishna River and promoting sustainable water governance across its basin.
