Mangaluru: Deputy commissioner Darshan HV has directed the police department to regularly share information with the department of women and child development (W&CD) regarding cases involving women and children as victims. Chairing a district-level review committee meeting of the women and child development department on Friday, the DC emphasised that timely information is critical for the department to extend required support and interventions. He instructed police officers to ensure that details of all such cases reported at police stations are promptly communicated to the department.Officials informed the meeting that 155 cases of atrocities against women and children have been registered in Dakshina Kannada from April to Sept 2026. Among these, 52 cases of atrocities against women, 10 rape cases, 79 Pocso cases, and one child marriage case have been recorded. Additionally, 39 missing children cases and 86 missing women cases have been registered, most of whom have been traced. A total of 11 dowry harassment cases were registered, out of which 10 cases are currently under investigation.The DC called for widespread awareness regarding the 181 women’s helpline, instructing that callers must receive immediate assistance.Under the Domestic Violence Act, 73 cases were registered in the district, of which 30 have been resolved and 31 are undergoing counseling. The Sakhi One Stop Centre provided assistance to multiple victims, including police assistance for 24 individuals, medical care for 59, and temporary shelter for 11, officials informed.While 1,823 internal complaints committees (ICC) have already been established across the district, the DC directed the labour and industry departments to ensure ICCs are set up immediately in all remaining factories and establishments.Transgender welfareAt a meeting of the District Transgender Coordination and Monitoring Committee chaired by the DC, officials informed that a list of 15 homeless transgenders has been submitted to the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) for residential site allocation. Steps are also being taken via the Women’s Development Corporation to provide grants for self-employment. A recent survey identified 96 registered transgender individuals in Dakshina Kannada, and provisions have been made for them to apply for rehabilitation programmes through the Seva Sindhu portal.Zilla panchayat CEO Narwade Vinayak Karbhari and senior officials from various departments were present.
